French toast roll ups – a perfect weekend breakfast

On weekdays you probably don’t want to spend too much time on making breakfast. As most of us, you probably choose quick and easy 5-minute recipes such as scrambled eggs or oatmeal smoothie breakfast. When the weekend comes, it’s totally another story. You can spend a few extra minutes in the kitchen and wake up your family members with a smell of french toast roll ups.

Even if you often eat a french toast for breakfast, french toast roll ups are something different. It is not the same flavor even if you spread some nutella or cream cheese on your french toast and toss some fruits on top of it. When you make french toast roll ups you fry the bread together with all these ingredients. Maybe that’s the secret, who knows.

Anyway, this sugar-coated french toast roll ups will take about 20 minutes of your time and it is nothing compared to that perfect smell and taste.

How to make french toast roll ups with nutella?

Ingredients for french toast roll ups:

Batter for french toast: (you can use it for roll ups, a regular french toast or french toast sticks)

  • 2 eggs
  • 2-3 tbsp milk
  • ½ orange squeezed
  • 2 tsp brown sugar (or any other sugar, including vanilla sugar)

Fillings and toppings:

  • About 2 cups of fruit of your choice ( I put blueberries, strawberries, cherries, peaches…)
  • 8 tbsp Nutella (or cream cheese)
  • 8 slices of toast bread
  • Some caster sugar for coating (or brown sugar)

Preparation steps:

  1. Whisk two eggs and add 2 or 3 tablespoons of milk and fresh orange juice of one half of orange.
  2. Add some sugar, two teaspoons or so. You can use vanilla sugar, brown or white sugar, whatever you like.
  3. Take the slices of bread and remove the brown edges with a knife.
  4. Use a rolling pin to flatten each slice of bread.
  5. Spread nutella or cream cheese on the whole slice.
  6. Now is the time to turn the heat on and put some oil or butter in your pan.
  7. Place the fruit pieces only on one side of the bread so you can roll it. Don’t forget to chop the fruits if they are too big.
  8. When the pan is hot enough, dip one roll into the egg mixture and make sure it is soaked on all sides.
  9. Fry the rolls at medium heat for no more than 3 min at each side.
  10. Coat the rolls with caster sugar, cinnamon, brown sugar, whatever you like.

What to put in French toast roll ups – Playing with the ingredients

What I like about these French toast roll ups is that you can make them different every time. First of all, the choice of fruit gives you endless combinations. Then the spread choice- you don’t need to use nutella all the time. Finally, you can play with spices and add cinnamon or vanilla, and use different coatings and toppings.

What fruit to choose? – Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, peaches, cherries go well because they are easily heated and don’t stay hard. I didn’t try apples because I am afraid they need more cooking time. You can also put bananas but with all that sugar and nutella, that will be a very sweet breakfast. If you prefer sour fruit, kiwi can also be a good combination with nutella.

Nutella or cream cheese? – If you want to make french toast roll ups that are not so sweet, use cream cheese instead of nutella. It goes very nice when combined with strawberries.

With or without coating? – No matter what fruit and spread combination I choose, I always sprinkle some sugar on it. I avoid rolling a french toast roll up into sugar because it will soak too much of it. Just sprinkle some caster sugar, brown sugar or any other type of sugar over your rolls. If you like crunchy rolls, use brown sugar instead of caster.

What about toppings? – If you don’t count calories, you can garnish your rolls with some toppings. Toppings always make the pastries even more delicious. So you can put some honey, heavy cream, pomegranate molasses, etc.

How to cook french toast roll ups?

If you have a cast iron pan, you won’t need much oil or butter to fry the rolls. But if you don’t have a pan that doesn’t stick, you should choose a deeper pot. Similar to making french fries, you will need a lot of oil and a pot. The general rule of frying food in a deep oil is- the more oil you put, the less oil your food will absorb. And don’t forget to wait until the pot is well heated to put the rolls. If you put them too early, they may stick to the bottom.
